Tax for Content Creators and Freelancers

Income from brand deals, platforms, affiliate links and foreign clients is taxable in South Africa, and so are many gifted products. We help creators and freelancers get registered, keep the right records and pay the right amount.

Updated 5 October 2026.

Is my content creator income taxable?

Yes. If you are a South African tax resident, SARS taxes your income from all sources, including:

  • payments from brands and agencies;
  • platform payouts, such as YouTube, TikTok or Twitch revenue;
  • affiliate commissions and sponsorships;
  • payments from foreign clients, converted to rand.

Are free products and trips taxable?

Often, yes. When you receive products, services or travel in exchange for creating content, SARS generally treats their market value as income, just as if you had been paid in cash. Keep a record of what you received and its value.

What expenses can I deduct?

You can generally deduct costs you incur in producing your income, as long as you keep proof. Common examples are equipment such as cameras and laptops (usually claimed over several years), editing software and subscriptions, the business share of data and phone costs, and travel to create content. Home office deductions have strict rules, so check before claiming one.

Do I need to register for provisional tax or VAT?

Most full-time creators and freelancers are provisional taxpayers, because no PAYE is deducted from their income. VAT registration becomes compulsory once your taxable sales exceed R2.3 million in 12 months; see our VAT registration page.

How we help

  • Register you with SARS and set up provisional tax.
  • Set up a simple way to track income, gifted products and expenses.
  • Handle foreign currency income and platform payouts correctly.
  • Bring things up to date if you have income you haven’t declared yet.

Common questions

Do influencers pay tax in South Africa?

Yes. Income from brand deals, platforms, affiliates and sponsorships is taxable for South African tax residents, including income paid from overseas.

Is gifted product taxable?

Generally, yes, when it is received in exchange for content. SARS treats the market value as income.

I get paid in US dollars. How is that taxed?

South African tax residents are taxed on worldwide income. Foreign income is converted to rand and declared on your return, and you may be able to claim credits for foreign tax already paid.

I haven’t declared my creator income yet. What now?

It is better to come forward before SARS contacts you. We can work out what is owed, bring your returns up to date and help you limit penalties.
